Top New Year's Resolutions to Kickstart 2013

Now that Christmas is behind us, we’ve welcomed the New Year. We dodged the predicted end of the world, enjoyed the holiday season, and stepped into 2013. For most of us, a new year means a fresh start, and about 90% of us will set one or two New Year’s resolutions. The goals we set are often influenced by our experiences from the past year. Here are the top resolutions made in January 2013.

**Saving Money**
Saving money ranks as the most popular resolution this year, with 25% of people deciding it’s time to save up for things they’ve always wanted. Whether it’s for a house or a rainy day, the recession has made many of us more mindful about saving for a better future.

**Reducing Debt**
In response to the ongoing recession, 18% of people resolved to reduce their debt in 2013.

**New Job or Career**
About 16% decided it was time for a career change in 2013. This is a common resolution, but it gained extra popularity this year. Many of us believe a different career path could improve our financial situations.

**Lose Weight and Improve Fitness**
With slimness and fitness still fashionable, 11% of people committed to losing weight, toning up, or being healthier in 2013.

**Home Improvement**
Many of us have those home projects we’ve been putting off. In 2013, 10% of people set out to improve their homes, often to increase their home’s value. Installing wood flooring was the most popular home upgrade.

**Quit Smoking**
Always a common goal, quitting smoking got more momentum thanks to ongoing anti-smoking campaigns. This year, 8% of people aimed to kick the habit.

**Give Up Drinking**
Often a spur-of-the-moment resolution made on January 1st after a bit too much New Year’s Eve partying, 7% of people vowed to give up drinking.

**Spend More Time at Home/With Family**
Finally, 5% of people felt they weren’t spending enough time at home or with their families. The warmth of the holiday season often inspires a greater desire to spend time with loved ones.
